Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion-PLIF

A procedure designed to better allow for biological grafting of fractured or broken vertebrae. It is performed from the posterior (back), involving incision, cutting of tissue, removal of damaged organic material and replacement with a metal bone graft. A successful surgery allows relief of acute, chronic back pain while insuring spinal integrity and stability. As a more traditional spinal surgery, PLIF has other alternatives such as Anterior or Lateral Interbody Fusions. Each procedure is specific to the patients’ situation and needs.
